Psst....If you haven't read the first part yet, go here... And welcome back! This week we'll finish up going over some tarot myths that we started last week. So let's get right into it: 7) Your reading isn't valid unless it's 100% accurate immediatelySometimes it takes time for the results of a reading to kick in. Not everything can be called out right away as it's going to happen. For example, I did a reading for a woman about some relationship issues and when they were going to come to a head. Tarot cannot give specific dates, but it can gives time frames (which we'll go over in another post). So, when it came to this woman's problem, it was going to take from a few weeks to a month for everything to climax with her partner. She understood this, especially since issues within relationships can take some time to come to a head. Some people don't understand this. Some clients, or even people who aren't clients, will claim you're a fraud because you can't read their mind with the cards or tell them exactly how everything will happen tomorrow. If you can't give them want they want, when they want it, then you're a hoax. It's not true. I promise. As the energies in our lives and which surround us change, so does our path in life. Tarot just gives you a snapshot of the here-and-now. That can change. It can also take a long time for predictions made from the cards to come true. How can I combat this then? Remind the client that 1) to wait at least a month before getting the exact same reading done from anyone and 2) that circumstances can change very easily with any decision or action made. So if something has happened and they feel it might effect their reading, invite them to come talk to you about it. Be willing to answer questions and give clarification. It's the kind and smart thing to do for both of you. 8) you must cleanse your deck with every readingThere will be a post about tarot deck maintenance in the future, but we'll address this question now. It's recommended, so you don't confuse the energies within your deck, to cleanse your deck in between readings. However, it's not required. Don't let anyone tell you that. This is, again, a situation in where you do what you're most comfortable with. If you want to cleanse after a batch of readings, go for it. If you want to do it after every reading, fine! If you don't at all, well that's your choice! The choice is always up to you. 9) you have to shuffle your cards in a particular way because _____I find it pretty silly to dictate this. Once again: DO WHAT YOU'RE COMFORTABLE WITH! If you want to fan out the cards or shuffle them like playing cards or just draw one randomly, fine! If you want to be crazy and toss them all on the floor and pick the ones that are face up, that's fine too!. It's what works for your that matters. 10) you can only do readings for yourselfThis one's tricky, This is why: Some readers have a hard time doing readings for themselves. Because we know their meanings so well and we know their personality of our decks, we can have a habit of arguing with them. No, everything's supposed to be this way. But that doesn't make sense! Whatever, I'm just going to look up the meaning... See! This one website says that I was right and you were wrong with every else you're telling me. HA! Don't do this. You're not only discrediting yourself and your abilities, you're breaking a trust-built relationship with your cards. When you stop believing in your cards, there's no point in reading them anymore. When you read for yourself, you need to get out of that mindset where all the meanings that card could have flood into your mind and you frantically search for the one you like. Tarot isn't supposed to tell us what we want to hear; it tells us what we need to hear. So if you know you have a tendency to do this and need to step back, it's okay. Let someone else do a reading for you. It's good practice for being the client and let's you relax a little bit. 11) if you're new to tarot, you can't do readingsWe all started out not knowing shit about the cards. No one has woken up and magically known what they all meant. If that were true, I'd be insanely jealous. We all have to start to practice somewhere and learn somewhere. The only way to improve is to practice. And you can only practice giving yourself readings for so long. It's okay to put yourself out there. Ask friends or family if you can give them readings. Go on Tumblr and do free readings for practice (you'll get A LOT of requests). Just DO IT. Don't let inexperience stop you. 12) if you're not more experienced/been doing this for years, you're worthless as a readerI'll be honest and admit that I compare myself to other readers all the time. Especially the ones that have seemed to get where they are with ease. It's infuriating and disheartening. It makes me want to give up some days. Others it makes me ridiculously hard to be around because I'm so emotional. When it comes to reading styles, try not to compare yourself to someone else. They've been doing this for years, yes, but they've found what works for them. Not what works for you. You have to decide for yourself how you want to do readings. Will you predict future events? Will you answer yes or no questions? Will you incorporate astrology and numerology in your readings? Will you cleanse your deck beforehand? Will you let the client shuffle your cards? Who knows, it's up to you!
