Over the past year or so, my husband has been steadily getting more and more interested in practicing magic. As an atheist, he has a difficult time considering anything works unless he sees it himself. After seeing me become more confident in my magic, and encouraging me to come out of the broom closet little-by-little, he started looking around for tarot decks to try. Naturally, I was excited as shit. I immediately started scouring the interwebs (because we're currently in rural Colorado with no metaphysical things to speak of around) for a deck. Then one day, we found the perfect deck for him on Etsy: The Gothic Horror Tarot. This is what we think: Tobias Durose, from PlaceboArtwork, originally came up with the idea of this deck during his last semester of school. He had completed his course and, instead of sitting and twiddling his thumbs like me, Mr. Durose created a 78-card tarot deck. It was an ambitious project, ask anyone who does these kinds of challenges how difficult it is. Mr. Durose wanted to keep the integrity of the original Rider-Waite imagery but with a Victorian/Horror twist.
For one, I adore the Major Arcana. The journey of The Fool is one of the most important parts of the deck, as a Major Arcana card symbolizes where you are in life and what major situations are affecting you. I think Mr. Durose did a perfect job at displaying that journey. The decks I've seen so far in my life don't have the same image of The Fool popping up over and over again. Which is strange, considering it's their journey. The creator wanted to show the Fool go on this journey but didn't want them in every card. So he made her (The Fool is a girl!) pop by making her blonde and all the other Major Arcana characters white-haired. And, is it just me, or does this give major Alice in Wonderland/Madness Returns vibes with these cards? I LOVE IT! The fact that this deck has kept the original imagery does make it self-explanatory, but still a little disappointing, that it doesn't come with a guide book. As the creator is a graphic designer, it was clear that the art is what he mainly wanted to change, not the meanings of the cards themselves. As a gift, I highly reccommend this deck. Tarot decks are becoming more and more of a fun gift to give for Christmas and birthdays. This would be perfect for the horror fan in your life! My husband was also incredibly happy on how much this deck fit his personality. The images are very blunt and straight-forward; exactly how his likes everything. I'm really happy I got this deck for him and that it opened him up into the magical world of tarot!
If you want to buy the deck from PlaceboArtwork, check it out on their Etsy shop. You can also read more about Tobias' process and see original drafts of the cards on his website!
