There are way to many awesome tarot decks out there! My personal wishlist for decks is RIDICULOUSLY long. There's people I know who have hundreds of decks and, knowing they need to downsize, buy even more! Many people believe a tarot or oracle deck need to speak personally to you. That you need to go out in person and touch the decks, sensing their energy and if it's right for you. Others believe you must be gifted a deck from another person. Here's my problem with both of these methods: I live in a tiny-ass, conservative town in the middle of no-where. There are no stores that sell tarot cards, let alone crystals or runes or anything else of the witchy-variety within 200 miles. The one deck that was gifted to me I can't stand. It's nice, it was a lovely gift, but it drives me nuts. No matter how many times I cleanse or shuffle it, the cards don't want me; they want the original owner. It happens! Cards have their own energies and wants, just like people. I know that sounds a bit off, but once you've worked with tarot cards for awhile, it's easier to understand that the cards have a mind of their own. They call you out on your shit. They make you feel better when you feel like hell. They remind you that it's okay to not be perfect but you shouldn't be scarfing down cookies in the first place (sorry, cards...). That's why I'm a firm believer in trusting yourself and researching the kind of deck you would want. Today, we're going to go over some decks that I own and how I feel about them. Not all decks work the same way, surprisingly, and you'll see why. **DISCLAIMER: This article does contain affiliate links. I have personally used each of the items linked in this article. The author of this deck gives meanings based on single interactions or situations. It does go along with the original Rider-Waite definitions, it seems. But the creators make it very clear that you're supposed to use meditation to figure out the meanings of the cards themselves. Provided with the deck and very thin book is a DVD of word-based meditations for each card. Very cool idea. I will continue working with this deck; as I work with it more it's growing on me.
The art is very beautiful; all of them look like oil paintings that I'd hang in my home. I can happily and proudly say this is the first deck I ever completely memorized. The images of the cards still pop into my head when I read other cards. They just resonate with me that well.
I feel like the author of this deck, Ravnee Phelan, speaks to my soul, though. Just going through the overview, they're speaking about how everything works like energy and, in tarot, we're basically getting a mirror image of the energy we're ready to see when we do a reading. This has been pretty much what I've been saying about my beliefs for a few months now. Freaky, right? So far with this deck, I'm really enjoying it. It's already called me out on a couple of things (damn you, cards!) and I love it. It doesn't want to give me a straight answer either, but I'll get over it. As we get to know each other more, I feel like this deck and I will go places. Do keep in mind that these are just my personal experiences with these decks. Yours may be completely different than mine. And that's fine! It's your own experience! I just hope you take away from this that different decks are going to resonate with you differently. They also don't work the same. So the next time you go Amazon shopping for a deck or go by your local metaphysical shop for one, do some research about what you want. Maybe then you'll find just the deck you need.
