I've been obsessed with candles since I was a child. My mother told me one time, when the power was out in our apartment, she lit about thirty or so candles every where so we had light. Little four-year-old me ran around the house, ridiculously excited, and came back every two minutes or so to tell her the house wasn't on fire. I remember coming home to my room smelling like cupcakes because of my vanilla and chocolate-scented candles when I was nine. I remember laying on my bed, blasting Evanescence, writing poetry, and having twenty or so candles lit all around me when I was fourteen. I would constantly keep candles in my dorm, even though we weren't allowed to have them, when I was nineteen. I still have a billion candles, even those without wicks, now. Candle magic is one of the easiest forms of witchcraft to learn. So let's start having some waxy fun! When it comes to candle magic, you can break things down very specifically when it comes to spellwork, just like any other branch of magic. Here's a few things to keep in mind when you cast a candle spell: The FlameHow the candle's flame reacts during a spell can indicate how successful the spell will be. True there's other factors involved, like problems with the wick and how it was lit. However, this is still a good guide to follow. So if you have... ...a tall, strong flame: Your spell is working quite well. It's powerful and strengthened enough that it's working optimally. ...a flickering, unsteady flame: Your spell is having difficulties. There's some problems with trying to manifest what you want. Look over how you cast the spell and see if you can do anything to help it along. ...a dancing, wild flame: Your spell is all over the place! Expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to manifesting your intentions. ...a normal flame: Everything's going as expected. Woo! ...a small, blue flame: Your spell isn't going to work well. Use a back up plan or prepare a different spell. ...a crackling, popping flame: Your spell is likely to work, just in very unexpected ways. ...the flame go out: Meditate a moment; your guides or intuition may be trying to tell you something important. ColorsNow, color can have different meanings for different people. So, when it comes to candles, be sure that the candle you're using has the intent you want. For example, most people use green candles for prosperity spells. It's the color of money. Makes sense. However, if you want to use yellow because it reminds you of gold, go for it! Whatever works for you! When looking up specific candle spells, the writer will usually tell you why they specified the color of candle. Then you can change the color as you wish. However, here's a good place to start if you're stuck on color correspondences. Red: Can represent love, health, sex, strength, raw energy, or fire as an element. Green: Can represent money, luck, fertility, prosperity, or earth as an element. Orange: Can represent attraction, ambition, stimulation, or creativity White: Can represent truth, purity, peace, or spirituality. It's also sometimes used as an altar figure candle for The God in Wicca. Black: Can be used to repel evil and negativity, remove confusion or illusions, or heal discord. It's also used as an altar figure candle for The Goddess in Wicca. Brown: Can represent neutrality, overcoming uncertainty and hesitation, or can be used for grounding and centering. We all have our own personal associations with scents, especially as they can trigger memories. If you're unsure, however, here's a list of some ideas different scents can mean: Blueberry: Can repel and keep away unwanted energy within a home. Blue Rose: A popular choice when worshiping certain goddesses on your altar. Carnations: Can be used for natural healing. Cherry: A very loving and attractive scent; good for love and romance spells. Vanilla: Helps improve memory and with sex-related spells. tips and tricksSome other areas you can be really meticulous about with candle magic is the type of wax used, the type of wick used, and the brand of essential oils you use. It's always a good idea to clean the candles before you use them for any spell work. A clean candle is a stronger candle! When you do choose what color candle represents what in your practice, it keep that way. Mixing up the same candle's intentions can throw future spells off. Beeswax candles, in terms of wax, are considered the most powerful as it's a natural wax. However, they're the hardest to dye and scent. So it just depends on whether the color and scent mean more than the natural properties of the wax for your practice. The most powerful candles you can use are homemade. It's incredibly easy to learn, even easier if you're just re-purposing old wax. However, store-bought candle are just as good for spellwork. If you're hesitant to do a full-blown candle magic spell, you can always start with candle meditation. Just light a candle and focus on the flame and your breathing pattern. The next step in candle magic, for the hesitant, you can write a wish on a piece of paper and then burn it in the flame. This is also a fantastic, and very common, way to activate and charge sigils. Dressing a candle with essential oil can give an extra magical boost, especially to store-bought candles.
